    2018 wedding trends | UK wedding inspiration

    Congratulations, it’s wedding planning time (hurrah!) and I have put together a quick look at the best 2018 wedding trends for you.

    I have scoured the finest bridal blogs, flicked through the top wedding magazines and even photographed the coolest weddings to see what new ideas and trends are out there, saving you hours of planning time! You will find lots of brilliantly-creative wedding ideas here that will inspire you, and add a contemporary edge to your wedding. All wedding photography by me, of course!

     

    1. Celestial Beings

    Starry-eyed brides and grooms will love this theme. With so much scope for creativity, you can go all out like Jess and Crispin did (above and below), or maybe just add a casual nod to the night sky like star-shaped fairy lights on tables. Either way, it’s heavenly…

    2. See-through spaces

    Who doesn’t love the contemporary elegance of a Louis Ghost chair? They are one of the easiest ways to add this cool and modern wedding trend, though the same effect can be created by hiring an elegant glass-filled room – perhaps an orangery – as your wedding venue. It opens up the space beautifully, avoiding a heavy, cluttered look. Wedding styling by Always Andri (above left and below) and HeartShaped Weddings (above right).

    3. Black is the colour

     

    Add some drama to your decor with modern accents of black. Less is more and simplicity is the key to getting it right. Mix with some gold elements for the ultimate sophistication.

    4. Paper Art

     

    Many stationery suppliers offer a bespoke service, allowing you to create something that reflects who you are. Scandi wedding invitations (above right) by  Paper Arrow Press.
         I love Rachel’s gorgeous invitations above, featuring a wonderful drawing of their ceremony church, by the bride’s close friend which beautifully picks up the rich  reds of the bouquet.

     

    5. Relaxed braids

    I have photographed enough weddings to know that many carefully-coiffed brides begin to see their updos unravel by the time the guests are seated for dinner. If you’re a relaxed and chilled bride, you are going to love this new trend. These gorgeous braids will perfectly complement a modern lightweight wedding dress – full of movement and natural elegance.

    6. Bridal tiaras

     

    Tiaras are turning heads in 2018, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Alina’s look was inspired by one of her favourite works of art:  Vrubel’s Swan Princess – how enchanting does she look? Or for a more subtle take on it, Jessica is wearing the ‘Hedy’s halo crown’ from The Pink Collar Life.

    7. New Food

     

    This is a big London wedding trend and one that appeals to many of us. On your wedding day, wouldn’t it be great to see all of your guests mingling with each other, rather than confined to one seat for the entire meal? Food vans, spit roasts and bowl food have all featured at weddings I’ve photographed recently and I really love the relaxed atmosphere they help create.

    8. Dessert Tables

     

    Dessert tables continue the easy food trend, creating not just an eye-catching display for your wedding guests to “ooh” and “ahh” over, they’re also a great conversation starter and an epicurean’s delight.

     

    I hope you enjoyed this brief look at some of the best 2018 wedding trends so far.

    Photography is a very personal thing to me.

    I don’t see it as a separate entity or a ‘job’ and I wanted my logo to reflect that. Rather than choosing something pretty or a nice motif, I wanted to create something truly authentic, something that really represented me.

    An ensō is a Zen Buddhism symbol which can be interpreted in different ways. It can mean so many things: enlightenment, our connection to nature, strength, infinity, nothingness, fullness, the beginning and ending of all things. The English translation of this word is simply “circle”.

    To create your own ensō, you begin your circle, working clockwise in one single exhale, and continue round in one or two brushstrokes only. It is that breath, that moment in time, that is before you on the paper and however it looks, it is perfect. It represents you.

    Hiring a logo designer wasn’t going to work for this, so I ordered my brush and ink and took a deep breath instead.

    Our intrinsic connection to nature; its beauty and its fragility in every moment, is everything.

    Love, tears, happiness: all of the emotions that make us human and make us perfect, all of those fleeting moments we look back on, are the reason I love taking photographs.

  • Winter details from RHS Wisley – Surrey photography

    There is something about Wisley gardens that makes me feel utterly content.

    I’ve often wondered what that is. I wander through the grounds, camera in hand, and there is nowhere in the world I would rather be. It’s the same feeling I’ve always had when exploring new and interesting places in far away countries. Except it takes around fifteen minutes to get there. To me, it is like an entire universe condensed into one location where I can learn endless things about plants and nature.

    We go there as a family quite regularly and our young children love to run free, learn and explore too. Every season brings new joy, and there are always great workshops and exhibitions to see. In fact, everything I know about butterflies was learned in The Glasshouse, thanks to a very enthusiastic four year old! I could not recommend becoming a member highly enough, it is an incredible place to have in your life.

  • Bridal beauty – Hersham wedding photographer, Surrey

    As a Hersham wedding photographer, I feel very lucky to have some great wedding suppliers living locally. Hair and make-up artist Emily Mickelburgh is one of them, so one morning we decided to have a fun and impromptu photo session, showcasing some of her lovely work.

    We went for a classic glamour look, which worked beautifully on Charlotte, our willing model!

    For our bridal hairstyle Emily created a gorgeous updo where wisps of curly hair were pulled back into a low bun with perfectly styled curls, with the help of a little  TRESEMMÉ.

    Her bridal beauty had an English rose vibe with well-defined eyes (using  Eylure  lashes) and a  Bobbi Brown  eye palette. She used  Clinique  foundation to create a perfect base and finished the look with a soft pink sheen on the lips.

    I loved the final look; it’s both modern and elegant and I think it would work well on most brides.

    L’amore è tutto! | Surrey Christening photographer | Walton on Thames baptism

    I was recently asked to photograph a christening at St. Erconwald’s church in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. The little girl in question was called Grace, she was aged six months, of Italian descent, and had one of the loveliest, most cheerful faces I’d ever seen. She smiled with her eyes, and was so relaxed with the world that nothing seemed to faze her. Naturally, she behaved impeccably throughout the ceremony, and was quite mesmerized with the whole process. Afterwards, her family hosted a gorgeous reception for family and friends at The Angler’s, in Walton on Thames, Surrey, a perfect party venue on the banks of the river Thames. It was lovely to photograph such a close-knit, extended family and it made me realise how similar the Italians are to the Irish. Such a fun day.

  • Okishima & Simmonds London | Bespoke wedding florists | Kings Road, Chelsea

    I first discovered Chikae and Jessica, aka Okishima & Simmonds, whilst working on a creative photography project, and was completely blown away by their artistry with flowers. There is something truly wonderful in the way they combine their love of nature with contemporary design.

    Recently, they opened a pop-up store on the Kings Road in Chelsea, so I called in to say hello and take a few pics over the weekend. As expected, every area of the store is thoughtfully curated with beautiful, natural details, modern colour palettes, and the most incredible floral designs everywhere.

    Jessica’s friendly dog Bruno was also on hand to greet customers and show them around.

    If you are in the area (or planning your 2016 wedding or event) keep an eye out for it. It is located in the old Hand and Flower pub at 617 Kings Road and is well worth a visit.

  • 2016 trends | London Wedding Fair @ ExCel Centre | photography

    The Wedding Fair at ExCeL London is perfectly located for brides from London, Essex, Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and across the South East.

    I went along to have a look around and see what key trends to watch out for in 2016 – and hopefully inspire all you gorgeous brides to be!

    Firstly the dresses…

    Many brides are choosing to cover their shoulders, so I saw quite a lot of sleeved gowns which seem to be taking over from the strapless variety this season. And lots of delicate cap sleeves made with fine lace detail for a lighter look.

    A striking bridesmaid’s dress in midnight blue from David’s Bridal made me really wish my younger sister would hurry up with her wedding planning!

    Backless bridal gowns were popular, like the gold sequined beauty from Bridal Gowns by Jodi.

    And did you know one in six couples now make their pet part of the ceremony?

    I had a nice chat with Fiona from Fifi’s Cakery, and she showed me some of her most popular choices for 2016. This beautiful (and no doubt scrumptious) three-tiered cake with delicately hand-painted flowers adorning it. Also trending at Fifi’s was an incredible wedding cake embellished with edible gold leaf and hand-pressed flowers. Such truly wonderful creations!

    I met Victoria and the rest of the team from the recently-launched Absolutely Weddings, a luxury bi-annual magazine full of aspirational bridal ideas and stunning photography. Wedding favours finished with gorgeous vintage brooches from Venue Stylists were some of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen. A dream for every detail-loving wedding photographer! Or add some extra lighting elements with some vintage signage.

    A less structured, more organic approach to florals was also visible. Understated flourishes of baby’s breath nestled in mix and match mini vases add a relaxed vibe to the day. Natural, organic materials can create wonderful, inexpensive centrepieces. Vintage crockery was also very popular…Strong influences from the US wedding market meant a fresh approach to chair design, with lots of lace, pearls and ruffles.Soft metallics of gold, rose gold, and copper replaced traditional table covers. Patterned tablecloths were also an emerging trend.

  • Engagement photography session | Columbia Road Flower Market | Hackney | Contemporary London wedding photographer

    Sometimes a couple exude love. That was the first thing I noticed about Sheila and Eugene – the unspoken closeness between them. After getting to know them a little, I knew that theirs was not a frivolous love but one of deep tenderness. And devotion to each other. They have been through tough personal challenges which have clearly brought them even closer together. They are the epitome of what love should be, and I cannot wait to photograph their epic wedding! One sunny Sunday in July, we met for a pre-wedding photo session at London’s famous Columbia Road flower market. Here is a selection of images from that memorable morning.
